Lieutenant Colonel Amirul Adly bin Haji Ali was born in 1974. He joined the Armed Forces in 2000 and was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, United Kingdom in August 2002.

He began his career by serving in the Infantry Company 3rd Battalion Royal Brunei Land Force as a Platoon Commander and 2IC Company. As he progressed as an infantry officer, he was posted to the Recruit Company as the Training Officer in 2005. In the same year, his service was called upon for an operational tour as a member of the second batch of the International Monitoring Team in Mindanao, The Republic of Philippines for a year. The mission accorded him enormous operational experience. He was awarded the ‘Kagitingan’ badge by the Armed Forces Philippines as recognition for his tour. Additionally, he was bestowed the Meritorious Service Medal (P.J.K) by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in recognition for his dutiful service to the country.

Following this deployment, he returned to serve in the Infantry as the Officer Commanding of the Special Task Platoon. Thereafter, in 2009, as the adjutant of the 2nd Battalion Royal Brunei Land Force. Later the same year, he was given the opportunity to develop his Staff duties abilities when he assumed the post as a desk officer at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Ministry of Defence as a Scholarship Officer for the Ministry of Defence Scholarship programme. During this appointment, he had the opportunity to be extensively involved in policy matters and had oversaw and reviewed some policy changes with regards to the Ministry of Defence and Royal Brunei Armed Forces scholarship scheme. This opportunity allowed him to view things at the strategic level as well as be exposed to administrative mechanisms. He was promoted to Major in 2009, during his tenure in this establishment.

On 1st July 2012, he was posted to 1st Battalion Royal Brunei Land Force for his commanding role as the Officer Commanding of C Company. In 2014, he was given another instructional role as the Intake Commander at the Officer Cadet School, Defence Academy Royal Brunei Armed Forces. Towards the end 2015, he was then posted as the Deputy Chief Instructor at the Defence Academy Royal Brunei Armed Forces Headquarters. A year later, he assume a command post as the Battalion Second in Command of the 2nd Battalion Royal Brunei Land Force and remained for nearly 2 years.

On 12th November 2018, Lieutenant Colonel Amirul Adly assumed command as the Commanding Officer of Officer Cadet School and was duly promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 23rd November 2018.

On 1st September 2020, he was posted to Training Institute Royal Brunei Armed Forces and held the position as the Chief Instructor and on 02 February 2024, he posted to Defence Academy Royal Brunei Armed Forces become Deputy Commandant. Throughout his service, he has attended various career courses amongst which are Platoon Commander Course (Training Institute RBAF), Basic and Advance Manpower Operation Course (SAFTI-MI Singapore), Battalion Tactics Course (SAFTI-MI Singapore) and Command and Staff College (CSC Defence Academy RBAF) in 2015, Executive Development Program (LKY NUS-SHHBIDSS) in 2019. In the same year as well, for his service, Lieutenant Colonel Amirul Adly received the Most Blessed Order of Setia Negara Brunei, 4th Class (P.S.B) in 2019.

Lieutenant Colonel Amirul Adly is married to Colonel (R) Norsuriati and blessed with a daughter and a son. His interests include a variety of sports, browsing the internet for the latest news and travelling and has passion in decorating his residence.​
