TANAH JAMBU, Tuesday 21 May 2019 – Dr. Bernard Loo Fook Weng, Senior Fellow with the Military Studies Program at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore delivered a lecture today on “Disruptive Technologies: Implications on Military Organisations” to the 9th Command and Staff Course (CSC 9) at the Defence Academy of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces as part of the Defence Policy and Strategic Studies Module.During the lecture, Dr. Loo covered a wide variety of topics on how technological advances once incorporated into military doctrine have shaped the battlefield at the strategic level. From the English Longbow to nanotechnology, advances in technologies have fundamentally changed the character of warfare. Today, the information technological revolution is at the core of disruptive technologies which shape the strategic narrative for all state and non-state actors. Dr. Loo also demonstrated how disruptive technologies are changing the character but not the nature of warfare. The informative, thought provoking, and entertaining lecture concluded with a question and answer session from the students of the CSC.
Following the lecture, Dr. Loo was presented with a token of memento from the CSC 9 by the Directing Staff 1, Lieutenant Colonel (U) Peter bin Ulat @ Yulat. Dr. Loo completed his doctoral studies at the Department of International Politics at the University of Wales, UK. He is the author of Medium Powers and Accidental Wars: A Study in Conventional Strategic Stability.
