Thursday, 27 July 2023 – The Command and Staff Course (CSC) delegation in Australia visited the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) on the fourth day of their Overseas Study Tour. ASPI is Australia’s leading strategy and defence policy think tank.

During the visit, the delegation attended briefs from ASPI on current Indo-Pacific security challenges and the recent Australian Defence Strategic Review. Two course participants from the Brunei CSC also presented their insights on regional maritime challenges, cybersecurity trends, and the need to build a resilient defence industry as part of a broader defence capability. A round-table discussion followed, with a frank exchange of perspectives from both sides on a diverse range of hot button security issues.

The visit allowed the delegation to take a deep dive into a wide range of defence policy issues with world-leading defence and security experts. It deepened the delegation’s understanding of the primary drivers behind Australia’s recent strategic review and the shifts in strategic thinking on deterrence, resilience, readiness, and force structuring.
